Starbucks Pledges Changes to Boost Sales. No Plans to Reduce Waste?
March 21st, 2008 by Rich
Forgive me while I break away from the pure China content to focus on an article I just read about how Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz unveiled his plans to to recaffinate the Starbucks brand.
Faced with weakness in its U.S. business and a sagging stock price, the Seattle coffee company this week unveiled a series of big changes, including a new coffee blends and improved espresso equipment, a program to reward loyal customers and an interactive Web site.
What I find interesting is that they are missing an opportunity.. a HUGE opportunity to do something that will save them a LOT of money, and perhaps would bring them some high value PR that would differentiate themselves from the competition. Reduce their waste.

Thank you for making this documentary and posting it online. This is the kind of stuff that I try to explain to people when they ask if I “like” China. I’d always tell them “China itself is alright, some of the places have very interesting technology, but the government is a different story.” Thank you again for posting this.

Very powerful. Thank you very much for showing the pain that the Unseen China goes through every day. It opened my eyes.

[...] Unseen China - a documentary about the losers of China’s new economy. Almost an hour in length, with the first half focusing on the laid off workers of a former state-owned factory in Zhengzhou. Some of the stories, such as the police hiring thugs to punish protest organizers are so reminiscent of the early days of protest organization in the US. Some parts were just so pathetic that it felt very uncomfortable to watch. And the second half features Beijing families evicted from their homes to make way for Olympics-related construction. One such man took their case to court and was told by the judge even though his case was legally correct, the judge’s superior had ordered all such cases to be ruled against the little guy. What corruption! [...]
